La fotografa e regista olandese Robin de Puy sa guardare in modo diretto e profondo. Nei suoi ritratti ogni volto sembra custodire una storia, raccontata attraverso dettagli e gesti quotidiani, ed è proprio questa sensibilità a rendere Americanuno dei suoi lavori più intensi. Realizzata attraversando gli Stati Uniti tra il 2022 e il 2024, la serie raccoglie ritratti audio, video e fotografici di persone comuni che abitano uno dei Paesi più potenti e controversi del mondo, in un’epoca politicamente turbolenta. Le sue immagini ci invitano a osservare da vicino e ascoltare. Lasciando da parte i politici e i personaggi famosi, di cui conosciamo già voci e opinioni, quali sono le idee, le preoccupazioni e i sogni della popolazione americana, che conosciamo così poco? Alternando immagini e parole, American ci mostra momenti di resistenza, fragilità, ironia e dolore. C’è il titolare di un negozio di magia, in Michigan, che spera ancora nei miracoli; il ragazzo, aspirante biologo, che crede all’esistenza dei gatti assassini; la famiglia sikh, che insegue il sogno americano a Muscoda, in Wisconsin; i gemelli dell’Indiana, che vivono in tenda in mezzo al bosco. Ogni incontro rivela esperienze umane dal valore universale, in contesti individuali straordinari. Lo sguardo dell’autrice ci proietta in queste storie non per giudicare, ma per capire, scoprendo i lati nascosti e spesso ignorati dell’America. De Puy trasforma la fotografia in un gesto di vicinanza umana, costruendo un racconto intenso e sincero: «Negli ultimi anni ho riallacciato vecchie conoscenze – alcune nate già nel 2015 – e stretto nuovi rapporti. In un momento storico in cui si accentuano le divisioni e l’empatia svanisce, ho scelto di guardare oltre i titoli dei giornali e mostrare chi continua a resistere e rimane qui. Sono stata quasi sempre accolta con generosità: tantissime persone non vedevano l’ora di raccontarmi le loro storie». Quelle persone per lei sono di immenso valore. «La loro disponibilità è estrema. E credo che ci sia solo un modo per colmare lo spazio che ci separa: guardarci davvero a vicenda.»

The Dutch photographer and filmmaker Robin de Puy has a direct and profound way of looking at people. In her portraits, every face seems to hold a story, told through small details and everyday gestures. And it is exactly this sensitivity that makes American one of her most intense works. Created travelling across the United States between 2022 and 2024, the series is a collection of audio, video and photographic portraits of ordinary people living in one of the world’s most powerful and divisive countries, at a politically turbulent time. Her images invite us to look closer and listen. Beyond globally renowned celebrities and politicians whose voices and opinions we are privy to, what are the thoughts, concerns and dreams of the largely unheard people of America? Through images and words, American captures moments of resilience, vulnerability, humour andheartbreak. Whether it’s the magic shop owner in Michigan still chasing miracles, a young biologist-in-the making who believes in “killer cats,” a Sikh family forging their American Dream in Muscoda, Wisconsin, or the Indiana twins leaving in a tent in woodland, each encounter sheds light on universal human experiences in extraordinary personal contexts. The artist’s view lets us lean into these stories – not to judge, but to understand, to witness the intimate and often untold sides of America. De Puy turns photography into an act of human connection, building an intense and sincere narrative. “Over the past few years, I’ve reconnected with old acquaintances – some dating back to 2015 – and forged new relationships. As divisions deepen and empathy wanes, I wanted to see beyond the headlines and capture who truly endures here. My approach was nearly always met with generosity; so many were eager to share their stories,” she says. Those people are immensely precious to her. “Their openness is profound – and I believe the only way to bridge the gap is by truly seeing each other.”
